Books in different formats

When I first started writing books, the book format was print. A book was printed on paper as either a hard back or paper back book. Today the market has changed drastically.

My books on this web site are available in multiple versions so

that you can enjoy them on the move.

The e-book

Today it is almost manditory to print a version of the boook as an e-book. These are available on computers, from desktops, tablets,to smart phones. There is a trick to get them to reformat to each size screen.

Print version

I have selected larger fonts than normal to make the reading easier. The first two joke books are printed on 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper and bound. I wrote the jokes books at a nursing home and even the nurses and aids needed larger print from working with computers all day. The latest book, ‘Surgical Counter-Terrorism’ is being printed on 5.5 by 8.5 inch paper in larger print.

The audio version

I came to the conclusion early on that this is best left to a  professional. Paul Christy is the person who did one of the joke books and now two of the ‘Doc’ Strathmore adventures.  He has the equiptment to adjust the volume and intensity of the sound to match the requirements of the distributors. He literally produces the book after reading it. The one lady who did the ‘Fairytale of the Morley Dog’ did it with a British accent like a nanny reading a bedtime story to a child. It was magical from the first sentence. Many thanks to Fiona Schirmer for that production. Another consideration espically through Amazon is a function called ‘wispersync’. You can buy the book and have it read to you by the audio version (professional readers not a computer).

The CD for you vehicle or device

An audio CD used to be wav format and to get a book you had multiple CD’s flying across the passanger seat. Today my books are compressed in MP-3 format to get almost 9 hours on just one CD.  Some vehicles had the decoder chip as far back as 2007 but by 2010 most vehicles that had a cd player in them had the capability of playing the MP-3 compressed CD’s I was talking to the General Motors salesman and in most models not there is a spot for a USB to be inserted and the radio will play the USB information. It can be music or a book. He said that they may not be offering the CD player in the future. You can take the CD and copy the book onto a USB drive and them play it in years to come.
